The institute teaches undergraduate subjects for various schools of the Faculty of Sciences and other faculties of the UACh.  In this context, about 2,500 undergraduate students annually study different subjects in theoretical, practical, and theoretical-practical subjects in the following schools:

>Agronomy           

Graduate Profile

Professionals who graduate from the Agronomy career at the Austral University of Chile have a solid scientific-technological background.  With an innovative, entrepreneurial and adaptive attitude to change, they are enabled to respond to the current and future demands of society in the context of development of their profession.  In addition, they have a comprehensive and balanced training in basic and agricultural sciences, which allows them to address problematic situations in the professional field.  Likewise, they are capable of managing plant and animal production systems as well as available natural resources in a sustainable way, seeking to maximize welfare and profit for the companies in the agricultural and rural sector.

Where we work

Our Agricultural Engineers have a wide field of work.  Working in both public and private companies within the agricultural sector, either for production or export, they actively contribute to the construction of the “Chile agri-food power,” which is friendly to the environment.  Many of our agricultural engineers also work in commercialization and service companies, banks, and state institutions.  Many agronomists opt for the free exercise of their profession, consulting agricultural and livestock companies and even forming their own companies linked to agricultural activities. 

>Marine Biology

Graduate Profile

Each Marine Biology professional at the Austral University of Chile is capable of analyzing problems and solutions of global relevance and applying elementary concepts of the basic sciences to understand the relationships and interactions present in biogeochemical processes with the emphasis on acoustic ecosystems.  In this same context, the professional develops research in science and technology, manges aquatic ecosystems, guides decision making for sustainability, and proposes entrepreneurial ideas in contexts related to the use of aquatic resources. 

Where we work

As a professional of the UACh, you will be able to work in public institutions such as the Undersecretariat for Fisheries, National Fisheries Service, and planning services such as SERPLAC.  In addition, you will be able to work in private companies for the management of fisheries resources, extractive fisheries, product processors, and aquaculture centers.

>Biochemistry

Graduate profile

The Biochemist from Austral University of Chile is a professional with a strong scientific-technological background in the field of molecular biology, cellular biology able to apply basic knowledge to solve problems from a chemical and biological perspective. 

Where we work

Upon graduation you will be able to work in research laboratories, biotechnological industries, health system, biomedicine, diagnostic laboratories, food and pharmacological industries, teaching at Universities and institutes in the field of biology and chemistry.  

>Nursing

Graduate Profile

The Nurse from the Austral University of chile will be a professional with basic training in biological, psychological, and social sciences.  They will be capable of providing safe and quality nursing care under an ethical framework that is based on disciplinary models and scientific evidence.  Thus, using elements of sound judgement and foundations from disciplinary models and scientific evidence, learning strategies can be developed for the care/self-care of people, families, and community groups in health and disease contexts of different technological and social complexity. 

In addition, the professional will have skills in the field of education, management, and research.  In this sense, they will be able to develop educational projects and programs using the results of evaluations in order to improve the quality and safety of care.  Sociocultural contexts of the individuals and the healthcare network will also be considered.

Also, you can utilize available and potential resources from a strategic approach, evaluating their effectiveness for optimal distribution based on nursing care outcomes.  You can also make decisions at a personal level, under an ethical and professional framework, developing collaborative work strategies from discipline and implementing innovations to nursing practices while applying practical tools and methodologies for development in the units where you work. 

Finally, from the field of research, you will be able to build scientific knowledge, under ethical criteria, for both professional and disciplinary work while applying research methodologies and critical analysis of results; similarly, you will choose spaces for scientific dissemination, differentiating scope limitations and quality criteria from different sources of information within the fields of nursing and related areas.  You will also practice ethics in the healthcare context while interacting with the health team and members of the care network.

Where we work

Once you have a degree as a nurse, you will have unlimited work options, either through the free exercise of the procession or as an official in the area of your preference in public or private systems, universities, the armed forces, and law enforcement.  It should be noted that our graduates are practicing both in the country and abroad.

>Food Engineering

Graduate Profile

The Engineers and Food Engineers of the Austral University of Chile are professional with solid understanding of agri-food sciences.  They are able to apply engineering, technology, and research to the training, transformation, and administration of processes and mechanical and human industrial equipment for the management of raw food materials for human and animal consumption, ensuring safety within the legislative framework and sustainable management of the environment.  In addition, they manage and lead multidisciplinary teams responsibly with an innovative approach in line with socio-technological changes, all while taking advantage and optimizing the economic-natural resources with an ethical and responsible attitude.

Where we work          

Upon graduation, you will be able to work in companies or institutions related to the production, distribution, and commercialization of food products such as: manufacturing industries, state regulatory and supervisory institutions, technological research centers, universities and institutes.  You may also be able to work as a Production and Development Engineer, Manager of Assurance of Quality, Production and Operations Manager in different industries and will be able to freely practice the profession through your own entrepreneurship.  You can carry out consultancies and trainings in the area and provide technical advice to companies.  You will be able to diagnose risk factors of the production processes associated with food safety while applying protocols and standards in accordance with the law and the target market.     

>Kinesiology

Graduate Profile

Each professional at the Kinesiology career at the Austral University of Chile has a solid training in basic biological, psychological, and social sciences and is capable of developing intervention models to optimize human movement and the health of the population at the individual and community level.

Through clinical reasoning, the professional applies therapeutic models and kinesic interview strategies, evaluating their results for immediate decision making using ethics and professionalism.  Based on the construction of explanatory models of normal and altered human movement, the professional can carry out projects of qualitative and/or quantitative research while communicating the results to others.  Complementarily, with autonomy, the professional can use tools from the fields of education and management such as: creation and monitoring of educational programs aimed at the implementation of prevention, promotion, recovery, and rehabilitation. 

Likewise, the professional uses management tools for the design of public and/or private projects from an innovative perspective, as well as for improvement optimization plans for the needs of the interdisciplinary team according to organizational aspects and aspects related to the management of resources in the context of performance in productive activities or social participation. 

Where we work

As a kinesiologist of the UACh, you can work in health institutions, rehabilitation centers and geriatric care, private clinics, and sports clubs.  Also, through the free exercise of the profession, you can provide advice to companies.  A space is also opened at the community level, municipalities, and primary care clinics. 

>Bachelor of Science

Graduate Profile

The Bachelor of Science with a focus in Biology, Physics, Mathematics, or Chemistry, is the “first step” of the academic career, where each student will receive an integral training in sciences and the management of the scientific method. 

You can specialize in biology or chemistry and receive the professional title of biologist or chemist.

>Veterinary Medicine

Graduate Profile

Each student that graduates from Veterinary Medicine of the Austral University of Chile possesses a solid scientific-technological training based in the institutional values that reflect its ethical, social, and environmental commitment. 

Each graduate has the skills to lead and exercise their profession in the fields of animal health and welfare, animal productions systems, prevention and control of zoonoses, and food safety security. 

Where we work

You can work in a variety of places, through the free exercise of the profession in consultancies, technical assistance, and animal clinics.  You may also work in public or private companies such as: food industries, animal farms, pharmaceutical industries, property or industrial administration.  You may also work in universities, research centers, livestock farms, or management. 

>Medicine

Graduate Profile

This is a modern career that delivers the necessary elements for the integral training process of its students, taking into consideration the implicit educational transition and ensuring concordance and relevance between the training provided and the needs of the population.

Each professional of Medicine of the Austral University of Chile exercises the profession in a general and comprehensive way. 

The professional is capable of managing the prevalent and non-derivable pathology, in addition to having the knowledge and skills of administration and management that allow him/her to manage programs and health facilities.  As a comprehensive professional, whose action is based on knowledge of the components of the human being: biological, mental, and social, he/she will address health problems in the areas of promotion, prevention, recoverability, and rehabilitation. 

Where we work

As a surgeon, you will have multiple job options to work in the National System of Health Services, private health care organizations, other fiscal institutions, and higher education institutions.  In addition, you may be able to work through the free exercise of the profession. 

>Obstetrics

Graduate Profile

The Midwife of the Austral University of Chile is a professional who actively contributes to the improvement of the quality of life of people from the areas of general health, sexual and reproductive health, and matters relating to childbirth.  The Midwife is a professional characterized by an excellent performance in the following areas: care and community, care management, and childcare education and research.  Being integrated in the healthcare and community network, the midwife shows high flexibility and adaptability to various sociocultural and health settings, always acting through ethical sense, social responsibility, respect for sociocultural diversity, and the promotion of people’s rights. 

In this way, the Midwife’s professional training contains the following responsibilities:

  • Provide graduates with a solid scientific, academic, and psychosocial training in the fields of Health Sciences, welfare and community, and care management while following the principles of human rights.
  • Train professionals who are capable of leading in care processes relating to sexual and reproductive health, socially, culturally, and politically, with respect to human rights principles and gender.
  • Facilitate the development of autonomous, collaborative, and solidary work skills from a social perspective in both a personal and professional context.
  • Provide professionals with tools for general skills in the use of information and communication technologies and problem solving. As a Midwife, you could be employed in the National System of Health Services, in private organizations that focus on health, and other fiscal institutions.  In addition, you could work through the free exercise of the profession.

>Dentistry

Graduate Profile

Each professional in the career of Dentistry of the Austral University of Chile is of excellence and resolution, whose action is based on promoting the health of the population by treating patients with the most prevalent pathologies of the stomatognathic system as well as those of general pathology.  This is done through a biopsychosocial approach. 

The professional works in different public and private health care centers, basing his/her work on the best available scientific evidence, while incorporating new technologies for a more efficient and effective performance. 

He/she is capable of administering, managing, and leading a dental health team and joining a multidisciplinary health team.  Likewise, it is expected that they will be self-critical, focused on improvement, socially responsible, and base their actions on solid scientific and ethical foundations within a framework of respect for current legal, biosafety, and environmental regulations. 

Where we work

Our dental surgeons may practice their profession in the following:

  • Private sector: independent exercise of the profession, providing advice in institutions, clinics, and private medical centers.
  • Public sector: in state services (hospitals, posts, and clinics)
  • Institutional sector: in the Armed Forces and Law Enforcement, Gendarmeria, and research.
  • Teaching sector: University teaching, technology transfer in research.

 

>Chemistry and Pharmacy

Graduate Profile

Each professional in the Chemistry and Pharmacy career at the Austral University of Chile is capable of manufacturing pharmaceutical products and managing medicines and supplies, with consideration to aspects of quality, safet, and efficacy through the evaluation of pharmaceutical policies and regulations.  The professional will lead work teams and develop research that contributes to its scope of performance.  In turn, the professional will be capable of dispensing pharmaceutical and food products and proposing pharmacological therapies that contribute to the well being of the patient. 

Where we work

As a pharmaceutical chemist, you will have a variety of job options in private, healthcare, statement, and institutional pharmacies.  You will also have options to work in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry, pharmacological and toxicological information centers, food industries, universities, research and development laboratories, among many others.

>Medical Technology

Graduate Profile

Each professional of the Medical Technology career of the Austral University of Chile has solid knowledge in biological science (exact and applied) and is trained to execute and validate examinations and procedures and apply specific treatments according to their specialization: clinical laboratory, hematology and blood bank, imaging and medical physics, and diagnostics and treatment.  The professionals performance is based on strong ethical understanding and on judgments based on scientific and clinical evidence within a framework of quality and biosafety standards approved by the health authority.  The professional will assume management responsibilities in public and private health institutions and develop health education activities aimed at training the community, peers, and other professionals.  Additionally, the training will allow him/her to participate in carrying out scientific research related to this area.  Lifewise, it is expected that in the exercise of the profession they will be able to establish effective communication and interpersonal relationships demonstrating a vocation for service, social responsibility, respect for freedom and multiculturalism, and commitment to the environment.

Each medical technology professional with the specialization in clinical laboratory, hematology and blood bank of the Austral University of Chile:

The professional has the skills and abilities to carry out examinations and procedures aimed at establishing morpho-physiological normality or diagnosis of diseases in humans, evaluating the patient, the process and conditions of the different types of samples.  In addition, the professional will diagnose the presence of etiological agents that cause disease, while considering their possible reservoirs and determining antimicrobial susceptibility.  Through they they support prevention, control, and health rehabilitation.  The professional will be responsible for ensuring the quality of the various analytical processes to support diagnosis, considering the continuous improvement and user satisfaction.  Lastly, his/her performance will be strongly based in ethical judgements as well as scientific and clinical evidence. 

Each professional who has graduated from medical technology with a specialization in Medical Imaging and Physics from the Austral University of Chile:

The professional has the skills and ability for the execution of examination and procedures aimed at establishing morpho-physiological normality or the diagnosis of diseases in humans, using different types of equipment for obtaining images, thereby generating support information for clinical diagnosis.  Through the execution of his/her work, he/she must evaluate the patient and the process in order to ensure the quality of the various analytical processes to support the diagnosis while considering the continuous improvement and user satisfaction.  His/her performance will be supported by strong ethical judgment that is based on scientific and clinical evidence.  This training can also apply to treatments in radiotherapy, and all areas governed by the biosafety and radio-protection standards stipulated by the health authority.

By qualifying as a medical technologist, you will access a wide field of work in the National System of Health Services, state and private health care organizations, analysis laboratories in the industrial and/or pharmacological field, companies of laboratory products, medicines or laboratory equipment, and in research and universities.
